How to Prepare for Your Massage

Getting Ready for Your Session

A little preparation before your massage can make a big difference to your experience. Here are some simple steps to help you get the most from your treatment.

Before Your Appointment

Hydrate

Drink plenty of water in the hours leading up to your massage. Well-hydrated muscles respond better to massage therapy and are less likely to feel sore afterwards.

Eat Lightly

Avoid having a heavy meal immediately before your session. A light snack an hour or two beforehand is fine, but a full stomach can make lying face-down uncomfortable.

Arrive Early

Try to arrive 5-10 minutes before your appointment. This gives you time to settle in, complete any paperwork, and begin to relax before your session starts.

Communicate

Let your therapist know about any areas of pain, tension, or injury. Also mention any medical conditions, allergies, or medications that might be relevant.

What to Wear

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment. You will be asked to undress to your level of comfort — your therapist will always ensure you are properly draped and your privacy is maintained.

During Your Session

  • Breathe deeply — Deep, steady breathing enhances relaxation and helps your muscles release tension
  • Speak up — If the pressure is too much or too little, let your therapist know
  • Let go — Try not to tense your muscles or help the therapist move your limbs. Relax and let them do the work
  • Enjoy the silence — You don't need to make conversation. Close your eyes and focus on the experience

After Your Massage

  • Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day
  • Take a warm bath to extend the relaxation
  • Notice how your body feels and carry that awareness with you

Remember: Massage therapy is your time. There is no right or wrong way to experience it — simply allow yourself to relax and enjoy.
